Description
Who would have thought slugs could be so delicate and beautiful. This one is grazing along the reef at about 40 feet at a dive site in Bonaire, in the Dutch Antilles. It is about 2 inches in length and covered with ruffles that supposedly resemble leaf lettuce, although I doubt its as crisp. These small critters are mollusks and come in various color shades including a brilliant blue. I have never seen blue lettuce but they still go by that name. They are fairly common but small and well camouflaged They blend in with the reef and algae. The Phylum Mollusca also contains snails, octopus, squid and other shell less snails as well as bivalves and chitons. They all have soft bodies in common. This photo may look upside down but it is not. Things underwater go in all different directions. However, you can hang the photo any way you want.
