A close up of a purple and white columbine flower. This image was taken at a public garden where it was being used as a filler plant for the more exotic flowers.
Aquilegia is a genus of multiple species of perennial plants found in meadows, woodlands, and at higher altitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. All of the species have the typical spurred petals. The spurs contain nectar which is attractive to long billed birds such as hummingbirds.
The genus name Aquilegia is derived from the Latin word for eagle (aquila), because of the shape of the flower petals, which are said to resemble an eagle's claw. Obviously named by someone with more imagination then me.The common name "columbine" comes from the Latin for "dove", which requires an even greater stretch of the imagination to see 5 clustered doves

My passion is underwater and nature photography. I particularly like finding patterns and designs in nature and getting down to the very basics with super macro views. In my early years, I had extremely poor vision and, as a consequence, I would get very close to things in order to see them. I think this handicap influenced my technique as I tend to try and create brightly colored, closely cropped, in-your-face images that are easy to see. Revealing the beauty in the mundane is my goal. I live in the countryside of western Oregon and have no trouble finding frogs, birds, mushrooms and flowers to photograph.I travel to warm waters for underwater shots as often as possible. Enjoy the photos.
