Description
Built in 1896 and in continuous operation as a railway station since then, Portland's Union station encourages you to "go by train". The centerpiece of the station is a 4-sided Seth Thomas clock that resides in a 150-foot clock tower. Just look at this photo to see what I am talking about. Today, Portland Union Station is situated near the Willamette river and Chinatown in ’The City of Roses.” The Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
Blue and gold neon “Go by Train” and “Union Station” lights on the exterior were installed in 1948 and are operational today. Which means they are just a tad older than me but still working, which I am not.
Portland purchased the station in 1987, and proceeded to restore the painted flower patterns of the waiting room’s ornate ceilings, and reopen the 1920s era phone booths. The booths are still there but no longer function. The neon telephone lights are still shining however. Just like me.
