Crinoids are marine animals In the same class as starfish, brittle stars, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. They can be attached to the sea bottom by a stalk and known as sea lilies, or in a free floating form such as this one and known as a feather star. The feeding arms whisk plankton particles into the mouth which is conveniently located near the anus in the middle area of the animal.
This image was taken during a night dive in Fiji. It was floating or crawling across the sea floor. The flash contributed to the beautiful yellow glow on the feathery feeding arms. The blueish tint of the sea floor compliments the yellow glow nicely.
My passion is underwater and nature photography. I particularly like finding patterns and designs in nature and getting down to the very basics with super macro views. In my early years, I had extremely poor vision and, as a consequence, I would get very close to things in order to see them. I think this handicap influenced my technique as I tend to try and create brightly colored, closely cropped, in-your-face images that are easy to see. Revealing the beauty in the mundane is my goal. I live in the countryside of western Oregon and have no trouble finding frogs, birds, mushrooms and flowers to photograph.I travel to warm waters for underwater shots as often as possible. Enjoy the photos.
