Description
I found this stained glass window in a church in southern Arizona. Jesse or Isai is the father of David who became the king of Israelites. Jesse Trees were common in twelfth and thirteenth century and could be seen on manuscripts, murals, sculpture and stained glass. The Virgin Mary as descended from Jesse, the father of King David. Most Jesse trees have at their base a recumbent Jesse with a tree growing from his side or navel. On higher branches of the tree are various kings and prophets of Judah. At the top Christ and Mary are shown. Jesus is surrounded by seven doves, which probably symbolize the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. In this window, Jesse is a word rather than a body and Jesus blends in with Mary. The doves seem to have flown away.
