Anna's hummingbird resting on the curve of a trellis with the muted hillside in the background. This little fellow has been guarding his feeder from other males all winter. There are several feeders in the immediate vicinity, and plenty of sugar water, but he still chases all others away.
The male's head and throat are covered in iridescent reddish-pink feathers that can look dull brown or gray unless the sun is shining on them. When he turns away the beautiful iridescence is gone.
These birds are relatively common in yards and readily come to hummingbird feeders and cultivated plants in the garden. They will also hover in front of the window when they want the feeders refilled.
My passion is underwater and nature photography. I particularly like finding patterns and designs in nature and getting down to the very basics with super macro views. In my early years, I had extremely poor vision and, as a consequence, I would get very close to things in order to see them. I think this handicap influenced my technique as I tend to try and create brightly colored, closely cropped, in-your-face images that are easy to see. Revealing the beauty in the mundane is my goal. I live in the countryside of western Oregon and have no trouble finding frogs, birds, mushrooms and flowers to photograph.I travel to warm waters for underwater shots as often as possible. Enjoy the photos.
