Description
A close up of the great gate at St John's College in Cambridge. The "yales" are the strange beasts that can be seen on either side of Lady Margaret’s arms. These are mythical, heraldic creates with elephants’ tails, antelopes’ bodies and goats’ heads, with horns capable of, supposedly, swiveling from front to back.
The yale was first written about by Pliny the Elder in Book VIII of his Natural History. The creature passed into medieval bestiaries and heraldry, where it represents proud defence. The Yale of Beaufort was one of the Queen's Beasts commissioned for the coronation in 1953; The Queen's Beasts are ten heraldic statues depicting the genealogy of Queen Elizabeth II.
