Description
After visiting England and seeing many chapels, cathedrals and churches, I got a little blase. It was not until I returned home and looked at some of my photos that I developed a true appreciation for these incredible architectural accomplishments.
The Kings College Chapel was begun in 1515 by the master mason Reginald Ely. It was commissioned by Henry VI and plans originally drawn up in 1440. Money problems keep it from being completed on schedule. Beneath a timber roof, which was clad with lead to keep out the weather, teams of masons spent months perched on scaffolding to assemble the chapel’s celebrated fan vaulting which ascends to the elaborate bosses punctuating the great spine of the building. Its a fantastic structure to look up into, made even more so by light streaming through the stained glass windows, parts of which can be seen just below the fan vaulting.
