Description
A macro photo of hoarfrost found on a rock in the middle of a small stream. Its January near Mt Hood in Oregon.
You need moist air and several days in a row of freezing fog to produce hoarfrost. When water vapor molecules contact a subfreezing surface they change from a gas state to a solid state, producing a coating of tiny ice crystals. With more moisture, the interlocking crystal patterns of frost become larger and more intricate, producing the hoarfrost.
