Description
A huge hermit crab has taken a Conch shell as its home. This image was taken in Belize during an underwater dive. Hermit crabs are ubiquitous but usually quite a bit smaller. They need to scavenge a shell to cover their soft bodies. As they outgrow their shell they fine larger and larger empty shells for their accommodation. I have never seen one this large before. They have very interesting eyes that are on stalks, and look quite comical as they lumber across the sea bottom. The back of the shell is covered with algae and other ocean debris but you can still see the beautiful pink within the conch shell.
