Description
This lineup of baby daddy longlegs is not technically a group of spiders. They are sometimes known as harvestmen, and the single segment of the body distinguishes them from the true spider also know as daddy longlegs. They also belong to the class Arachnida along with real spiders and some other eight legged insects. Their species name is Opiliones and they are ubiquitous around the world.
Unlike spiders they don’t have segmented bodies, they don’t spin webs, and they don’t produce venom or have fangs. Some of the species can secrete a chemical that is not harmful to humans.
Opiliones are known for aggregation behavior. Up to 70,000 have been recorded gathering together in a mass that looks like a ball of hair. The reasons for this behavior are unknown – scientists hypothesize that it could have to do with maintaining humidity or avoiding predation.
This is a small section of a line of these creatures taking shelter in the space between boards on a highway restroom... Beware next time you stop to "rest".
